An ensemble of magnetically coupled nanomagnets, known as artificial spin ice, has been used to create a functional material that has the potential for use in microscopic devices.
The measurements with x-ray photoemission electron microscopy reveal that this “chiral ice” behaves like a thermal ratchet, in which the average magnetisation only rotates in one direction. external pageGligaet al., Nature Materials (2017)
